PMGOL have revealed that the head of the refereeing organization Mike Riley has personally phoned Everton and issued an apology for the failure to award Everton a penalty in the dying stages of their clash with Manchester City at Goodison Park.
The ball bounced up and onto the arm of Rodri, but neither the referee nor the VAR on duty felt the need to award a penalty, which in all likelihood would have handed Everton a point.

Everton on Monday announced that they had launched a formal complaint against the FA following a VAR controversy that occurred in their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Frank Lampard was left speechless after the defeat, telling media outlets that ‘I’ve got a three-year-old daughter at home who could tell you that’s a penalty… It’s incompetence at best, if it’s not that, then someone needs to explain to me what it is.’
And as per Sky Sports:
‘The club were ‘absolutely incandescent’ at some of the refereeing decisions made in recent games and they are demanding at the very least an apology for manager Frank Lampard and his team.’
Of course, they have since been handed one.
Does it matter?
To cut a long story short; no.
We saw similar scenes in a game between Aston Villa and Sheffield United in the 2019/20 season, where the ball clearly crossed the line for a Sheffield United goal but goalline technology had not been switched on properly by the officials, so no goal was given .
Come the end of the game, Villa escaped with a point courtesy of a 0-0 scoreline. It was this point that ultimately kept them in the Premier League, and relegated Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth.
Everton at the present sit just one point clear of Burnley in 18th place, and there will surely be outcry if history repeats itself and that potential point comes to mean so much more come the final day of the season.
